Walking in the light (21)

Abel Ukachi Amadi

Every sinner is walking in darkness and needs to come into the light. Unfortunately, sinners cannot come out by themselves. But the good news is that Jesus came to bring them out. When sinners are saved, they are transferred from darkness into light. Colossians 1:13 says that

God delivered us from the domain of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His dear Son.

The word of God is light. As the writer of Psalm 119:105 says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s word illuminates our paths. The word of God instructs us and shows us the will of God, so that, we do not go into error. If you follow it, you will never walk in darkness. “For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life,” (Proverbs 6:23). To walk in the light is to obey the word of God, do His will, be obedient to His instructions, and not be dominated by the flesh (sin).

Paul says: “Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” The Bible said that if we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth (1John 1:6).

What does it mean to walk in darkness? Darkness is descriptions for hiding things that we know are wrong. The cover that we provide for our secret sins or our hidden motives is darkness. Any attempt to circumvent the truth is a work of darkness. There is a difference between saying and walking. We may say we are in the right relationship with God. We may say we have repented. We may say we have forgiven another. But when our lives continue to show our old sinful habits, we are then living a lie.

The proof of fellowship with God is in our walk more than in our talk. If you are in true fellowship with God you do not have to “say so,” your life will “show so” that you have fellowship with Him. “Walk” as used in Ephesians 5:8 is a figure of speech used to describe the daily path of life.

Some people have made a voluntary choice to walk in sin, a path that is opposed to God’s will. The true Christian walk is a “Spirit-filled” walk, a walk that leads to spiritual maturity. The one who walks in darkness will not grow spiritually; “darkness” represents living in a known sin and refusing to obey God’s word.

Living in darkness is living a life out of God’s will, His word and His way.

Our world is characterised by darkness, but there should be a heavenly spotlight upon the life of the Christian that shines in the darkness. Peter said that Christians are God’s special people that have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Christians have been “called out of darkness,” the opposite of living in darkness is living in the light. Christians are to shine like light everywhere they go and in every environment they find themselves. They should bear the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that, salvation will come to the unsaved world. This light of Christ is powerful and effective. It shines into our very being. It shines into the very being of dead sinners and gives them a new heart and a new spirit. It makes them alive, born again, saved, and regenerated.
