UniJos ASUU threatens strike, demands FG’s action on unmet demands

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to urgently address its pressing issues to avert another strike by academic staff in tertiary institutions.

Members of the union issued the warning during a town hall meeting held at the union’s secretariat in Jos. The meeting aimed to address lingering issues between ASUU and the federal government.

Held in collaboration with sister unions in the university, the students’ union government, parents, trader unions, and other stakeholders, the meeting sought to sensitise the public about the government’s lacklustre response to the union’s demands.

The union’s demands include revisiting anti-masses policies, exiting the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), returning to renegotiations, and signing the Nimi Briggs report.

Other demands are the payment of 35 months’ salaries and accumulated earned allowances included in the 2023 budget, the release of revitalization funds from the 2023 budget, reinstating the governing council that was allegedly dissolved illegally, and the payment of arrears for promotions and responsibility allowances. Additionally, the union seeks the payment of backlogged salaries to members omitted by IPPIS.
