Three die as another mining pit collapses in Niger

Two weeks after the collapse of a mining pit in the Galkogo community in Shiroro Local Council of Niger State on 2nd June 2024, another mining pit collapsed at Bazakwoi in the Adnun community of Paikoro Local Council area of the state, killing three people.


Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Mallam Abdullahi Baba Arah, who disclosed this in a statement, said that the incident occurred earlier on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

He added that the collapse involved local miners who were illegally scavenging for gold in the area.

The statement confirmed that three persons lost their lives, while one person was rescued alive with injuries.


As of the time of this report, no individuals were trapped in the mining pit, and there was no active search and rescue operation underway.
