SON, stakeholders to strategise on CNG standards

SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunoso Okeke

Following the Federal Government’s approval of 86 standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) operations in the country, yesterday, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced plans to strengthen its collaboration with oil and gas stakeholders in the country for its effective implementation.

The Director General, SON, Ifeanyi Okeke, disclosed this, yesterday, while presenting SON’s current achievements and areas of focus at the 2024 Strategic Leadership Retreat in Akwa Ibom State.

Okeke said: “Everything we do revolves around standard development, because that’s our key mandate. We have 125 standards developed and provisionally approved by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment.

“86 of these standards are for CNG operations, which SON worked with the Presidential Initiative for Compressed Natural Gas (PICNG) in the development of these standards.”

“The CNG standards are necessary to herald the implementation of the CNG operations, which was a promise made by President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda to provide an alternative fuel, to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal and full deregulation of the petroleum sector.”

Okeke noted that the CNG would provide a cheaper, cleaner and environmentally friendly alternative fuel utilisation across Nigeria.
