Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State urged people of the state to renew their faith in democratic government as they celebrated this year’s Democracy Day.

The governor gave the advice, yesterday, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary/ Media Adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku.

The governor said that government, under his watch since January 2020, had made impressive progress in the state despite impediments.

Uzodimma noted that residents of the state should join other Nigerians in accepting democracy as the best form of government.

Much as democracy has not solved all problems in the country, the governor said he believes a lot of “milestones have been achieved in the current democratic dispensation since 1999,” urging tolerance in imperfections of the political system.

According to Uzodimma, the freedom of choice, assembly and association has put the system above others.

He, therefore, promised to ensure that dividends of democracy would be made available to people of the state.

Similarly, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and governorship candidate in the state, Samuel Anyanwu, has urged Imo citizens and residents to keep faith despite insecurity challenges.

This was contained in Anyanwu’s Democracy Day statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media), Ikenna Onuoha.

He pledged better and safer Imo if elected in the November 11 governorship election in the state.

Anyanwu also criticised the state’s economy, describing it as “unhealthy,” wondering why a state that used boast of hospitality and security, has suddenly turned to a theatre of war for unknown reasons.

He said: “I am aware that your businesses have collapsed due to insecurity in the state. Your lives are threatened and properties destroyed; but I assure you that peace would be restored in Imo if elected governor.

“Despite challenges and losses, I appeal to you, in the name of God, to remain focused and law abiding, and continue playing your individual roles in consolidating our democracy until our state is finally salvaged.
