NPFL Stats: Over 1,300 cards issued, 708 goals scored so far

Data released by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Competitions Unit shows that a total of 1,311 cards (1,268 yellow cards and 43 red cards) were issued to erring players in 330 games, after matchday 33 of the season.


The data also indicated that an average of over two goals per match were scored after matchday 33, with a total of 708 goals recorded in the 330 games played so far by the 20 clubs. Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi is the leading scorer with 14 goals, while Enugu Rangers have the best attack with 49 goals.

Bendel Insurance have the stingiest defence in the NPFL.

Bendel Insurance have the best defence, conceding the least number of goals – 25 – in 33 games, while Gombe United have conceded the most goals: 61.

Further analysis of the records shows that teams have won 251 games at home, with 25 wins away from home, and 79 fixtures ending in draws. In the home wins, 512 goals were scored, while teams scored 196 goals on the road. Of these, there were 13 own goals.

The season has recorded a total of 85 penalties awarded, with 65 successfully converted.

The ongoing 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season has seen teams secure a total of 25 away wins out of 330 games, according to statistics released by the NPFL board on Tuesday. Home teams dominated with victories in 226 games, while 79 fixtures ended in draws.

Enugu Rangers have the best attack in the NPFL.

A total of 708 goals have been scored across 33 matchdays, with five rounds of matches still remaining. Of these goals, home teams scored 512, while away sides netted 196 times, including 13 own goals.

It was noted that teams averaged over two goals per match in the games played so far. Sikiru Alimi, Remo Stars’ forward, leads the top scorers’ chart with 14 goals in as many games. Enugu Rangers, the league leaders, boast the best attacking record with 49 goals scored.

Bendel Insurance has the best defensive record, conceding only 25 goals, whereas relegation-threatened Gombe United have the worst defence, having conceded 61 goals.

NPFL fixtures resumed on 26 May after a month-long hiatus to allow Rivers United to play five outstanding matches due to their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup. The next match day is scheduled for 1 and 2 June, with Rangers set to face Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, while Remo Stars will host Kano Pillars.
