Moffi replaces injured Boniface, Iheanacho arrives Cote d’Ivoire

Nice striker, Terem Moffi, has been called up to replace Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface, in Super Eagles’ squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off in Côte d’Ivoire this weekend.

Boniface picked up a groin injury in training and has been ruled out of the tournament.

The 23-year-old striker is expected to be side-lined for up to six weeks and will now fly back to Germany to begin treatment on the injury. Boniface has scored 16 goals with eight assists in all competition for the Bundesliga leaders this season.


The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will now await the approval of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to register Moffi for the AFCON.

Moffi has registered six goals with two assists in all competitions for Nice this season and has scored four goals in 12 appearances for the three-time African champions.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro has disclosed that Kelechi Iheanacho will join the rest of the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON after he completed his treatment for a muscular injury.

“Kelechi arrive Cote d’Ivoire. He has finished the treatment at Leicester City,” Peseiro stated.

The striker was injured at his English club and stayed back to recover fully for the AFCON.

Super Eagles will open their 2023 AFCON against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. before taking on hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, on Thursday, January 18. Their last group match against Guinea-Bissau on Monday 22.
