Mob sets robber ablaze over killing of PoS operator in Taraba

Angry youths have set a suspected armed robber ablaze for stabbing a female Point of Sale (PoS) operator to death in Wukari Local Council of Taraba State.


The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred on Monday, along the Wukari yam market road.It was gathered that the suspect went into the shop under the pretence of withdrawing some money from his account.

Sources said the suspect allegedly stabbed the lady on her neck in a bid to steal her money, but was apprehended while attempting to escape.

Youths reportedly pursued and apprehended him before setting him on fire. A member of the National Youth Service Corps, who pleaded anonymity, said some youths who witnessed the attack chased the suspect and exacted jungle justice on him.

The operator was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was confirmed dead on arrival by doctors on duty. One of the hospital staff said the victim died because she lost a significant amount of blood before arriving at the facility.


Confirming the incident, yesterday, the chairman of Wukari Local Council, Ismaila Dauda, said: “It is true that one young man went to a PoS operator and stabbed her to death on Monday, June 17, in Wukari.

“The suspect was pursued, caught and lynched by hoodlums. It’s a sad and unfortunate incident that happened. The young girl of 18 years came to prepare for National Examination Council (NECO) and unfortunately met her untimely death. May her gentle soul rest in peace and may Almighty God comfort the entire family.”

Dauda added that security agents were investigating the incident, and that the town was calm while people went about their normal businesses.

Also, spokesperson for the Police Command, Gambo Kwache, confirmed that the suspect was lynched by the mob.
