Lagos State Police Detain Singer Portable Over Unpaid G-Wagon Installments

Lagos State Police has detained Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, over unpaid installments for a G-Wagon.

What Actually Happened To Portable

Police arrested Portable on Tuesday after he failed to pay the remaining N14 million balance on a N27 million vehicle. He initially paid N13 million but the car dealer, unable to recover the balance despite multiple attempts, finally involved the police.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest. He stated that Portable refused to pay the outstanding amount, claiming the car was faulty.

In addition, the arrest video has gone viral on social media. It showed Portable attempting to escape getting arrested by jumping over a gate.

In Nigeria, failing to pay car installments can lead to various legal actions. Creditors typically first try to reach a settlement with the debtor. Furthermore, if unsuccessful, they may hire a lawyer or debt collector and eventually take legal action.

A court can then order the debtor to pay, with possible enforcement measures like seizure of asset if the debtor fails to comply.

If Portable does not settle the outstanding amount, the car dealer could initiate legal proceedings. This could result in a court case where Portable may be ordered to pay the remaining balance and any additional legal fees. Failure to comply could lead to the repossession of the vehicle or seizure of other assets.

Portable’s rise to fame began with his breakout single “Zazoo Zehh.” It featured Olamide and Poco Lee and it became an instant hit and brought him widespread recognition. His music often reflects his experiences and the realities of street life.

He has managed to collaborate with several prominent artists including British-Nigerian rapper Skepta.

Portable has a rich discography with several singles to his name, including ‘Pay Me My Money,’ ‘Ema Joke Dada,’ ‘Zazoo Zeh,’ ‘Ogo Forever,’ and ‘Testimony.’

Additionally, he has received recognition for some of his work. Including nominations for Best Street Artist and Rookie of the Year at The Headies in 2022.
