Lagos commissioner vows to prosecute trespassers

• VC seeks police patrol in school

The Lagos State Lagos Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has promised to deal with trespassers in the state and bring every offender to book. Alabi made the promise when he paid a visit to the Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State, at the weekend.

The commissioner also promised to support the school in the area of strengthening security after the school management lamented activities of land grabbers in its proposed School of Medicine in Ajah, Lagos.

Alabi said: “I recently handled a case of land trespassers in Ojo area, and I want to tell Lagosians that as long as they can establish ownership of the lands, they should call on law enforcement agents when land grabbers are sighted.

“One of the reasons there are still trespassers is the poor enforcement of law. So, I told my men that when somebody has committed an offence, he should be charged accordingly so that the issue of giving him a second chance to return the society to continue with the same crime will not happen. It is because they have not been dealt with in a holistic manner that is why they continue to commit the same crime.

“Omo Oniles are becoming high dragger monsters but I assure that anyone caught will face the wrath of the law. They are being encouraged to carry out nefarious activities, and it’s time to enforce the law against them. Land grabbers are not above the law, and they will pay dearly for their crimes.”

Speaking on drugs in school, he said: “I want to commend the management of Caleb University because I have not heard any case of drug-related activity or cultism in the school, I assure this university of our unwavering support.”

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, said: “This is the first time the Commissioner of Police is visiting Caleb University. For us, it’s a major development and we are excited to have him. We will continue to cherish this moment for a long time.

“We raised the issue of trespassing with the CP and we are happy with the assurance we got. Generally, we need the police, so, they have been supporting us. For us, the relationship has just started and I want to see it blossom more.”

While appreciating the presence of police patrol vehicles along Ikorodu-Agbowa road on-stop-and-search duties, to minimise crime in the area, the VC appealed to the CP for the establishment of a permanent police patrol team in front of the University gate to discourage criminals from attacking the school.
