Gombe: 200 Underage Rape Cases Reported In 2020

ABOUT 200 rape cases were recorded in Gombe State in 2020.
Also, 10 kidnappings happened in the year under review, with five so far recorded this January alone.
The state government, after investigations, disclosed that kidnappings were perpetrated by criminals from neighbouring Adamawa and Taraba states.
Addressing journalists, at the weekend, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Ethical Orientation, Batari Naji Dauda, said 40 rape cases were lodged in Gombe alone and 39 attempted rape were reported in the entire state.
He lamented that some cases were between fathers and their underage female children.
He said: “Thirty-seven were arrested for unnatural (gay and lesbianism) offences, 61 for act of gross indecency and three were cases of abandoned children in 2020.”
He lamented that gender-based violence had been recognised as human rights abuse “that has led to high rates of mortality, including gynaecological cases.”
