Gazmadu Education empowers 24 photographers through immersive training

In a bid to assist upcoming photographers with refining their skills, Gazmadu Education, recently held a Versatile Photography Training. The 12-week intensive programme aimed at sharpening the technical proficiency of aspiring photographers, and cultivating a vibrant community fosters meaningful connections, and ignites creative storytelling.

Founded in 2019 by the visionary Yagazie Eguare, Gazmadu Education, has risen as a guiding light for photographers of African descent seeking to refine their skills and build thriving careers.


According to Eguare, the Versatile Photography Training programme offers an unparalleled learning experience, guided by expert mentors who provide not only technical expertise but also in-depth critiques, dedicated mentoring sessions, and the chance to build a lasting network within the photography community.

With 24 accomplished photographers now poised to embark on their professional journeys, the 2023 cohort exemplifies the programme’s transformative power. The students were enriched with comprehensive modules covering: Camera controls, lighting techniques, and composition principles; Editing software mastery with Photoshop and Lightroom; and many more important skills relevant in the industry.

She further noted that eight students received 50 per cent scholarships through Camera Joint’s generous support: “Students were paired with dedicated mentors for project ideation, feedback, and critique. A 90-day photo challenge fostered consistency and honed skills was activated with mini-exhibition for the students to showcase final projects to industry leaders.”

The programme also featured an exhibition where students presented their capstone projects. An esteemed jury panel evaluated the works, with winners receiving amazing prizes from sponsors including Sony and Camera Joint.

One of the standout awardees was participant Gregory Akinlotan, recognised for his project “Beyond Barriers – Capturing Strength in Disability,” Gregory showcased exceptional talent and a commitment to storytelling with impact. Participants Mensah Nanabekoe Joseph, Wahab Saheed, Matthew Odedele, and Ikpemhosi Amakhabi completed the list of top five students.

The Award for Consistency Champions went to a trio of participants – Seyi Alawuh, Siyanbola Babatunde, Bukola Ufot, and Opeyemi Afolabi, for their dedication to the 90-day photo challenge. Through their commitment, they not only developed their skills but also embodied perseverance and passion for the craft.

Joseph Obiah picked up an award for the most versatile student for his active engagement with his team members, and consistent efforts to improve his skills.

The graduates’ journeys were guided by experienced mentors like Choice Okweku, Zainab Egbewunmi, Femi Asaju, Mr. Henry Oji of BigH Studios, Founder of VictorSamuel Photography, Victor Samuel, Ibukunoluwa Moses, and the lead Educator of Gazmadu Education Yagazie Eguare, who all provided invaluable support and guidance.

The programme seamlessly blended intensive hybrid training with online learning, ensuring accessibility and individual attention for all students.
