Four members of a family were confirmed dead yesterday due to suspected food poisoning in Banni, Kaiama Local Council of Kwara State.
The victims included Umar Mohammed and Kadir Mohammed, both sons of Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar of Olori’s compound, and two grandsons identified as Umar and Bashiru.
They were suspected to have taken tainted food on Wednesday and died in quick succession at various hospitals yesterday.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the death.
Spokesman of the NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, said the four members died around 7a.m. yesterday as a result of poisonous food.
He said: “We received information about the death of two children of Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar of Olori village, Banni community of Kwara North; Umar Mohammed (25) and Kadir Mohammed (18). They started vomiting around 4a.m. on Thursday and were rushed to the General Hospital, Igbeti, in Oyo State. They were tested and confirmed to have taken poisonous food. After few minutes, the two died in the hospital.
“As the family members were preparing to bury their bodies, one of the grandsons of Abubakar, Umar Mohammed, also died,” he said.
The PRO said that a team of NSCDC personnel led by the Divisional Officer, Mr. Adesina Taofeek, visited the family to condole with them.
“As we were with the family members, we were told that another grandson, Bashiru Mohammed, was rushed to another hospital, and on getting there, he was also confirmed dead,” Afolabi said.
He added that Taofeek advised other family members, who took the same meal with the deceased, to go for checks at the hospital.
Some other members of the family were later admitted at the hospital, for proper test and possible treatment to avert undesirable occurrence, The Guardian learnt.
