Finidi George has reportedly stepped down from his position as the Super Eagles manager.
Finidi confirmed his resignation on Saturday while responding to an enquiry into the situation of his engagement with the Nigerian national team.
“He (Finidi) responded “Yes” via SMS to the query,” Premium Times reported.
His resignation has come only one month into his appointment by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Finidi had assisted former Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro for about 20 months before landing the job on a permanent contract.
Things did not, however, go well for him following the Super Eagles’ failure to win any of their two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches under Finidi.
The Super Eagles continued their highly disappointing run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
With the team failing to secure their first win in Group C as they succumbed to a defeat to Benin, having drawn 1-1 with Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa, their qualification for the World Cup is shaky.
The first two results were during Jose Peseiro’s time as coach while the recent two were with Finidi whom the NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau had earlier confirmed was given a mandate to qualify Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup.
Finidi’s job as the Super Eagles coach was certainly on the line following a meeting between the Minister of Sports, John Owan-Enoh and Gusau.
Gusau after Thursday’s meeting with the Sports Minister revealed the NFF is working on new measures to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States (US), Canada and Mexico.
One of the measures is that the NFF would hire a foreign technical adviser while Finidi would be demoted to his former position as an assistant coach.
It appears the former winger is not too comfortable with the NFF’s decision, leading to his resignation after only one month on the job.
