The Federal Government, states, organised labour and the Organised Private Sector (OPS) are expected to present their positions as the committee charged with the negotiation of a new national minimum wage will be meeting for the fourth time.
The committee last met on March 28 and 29, 2024 where reports, documentation and previews of the public hearing held across the six geo-political zones were presented.
The invitation and agenda of the meeting sighted by The Guardian has it that the meeting of the 37-man tripartite committee is expected to be held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja.
The Guardian also gathered that discussions would be centred on the presentation of final reports by sub-committees on the new national minimum wage recommendation, sanction(s) for violation and procedure for reporting violations, appraisal of implementation and effect of extant national minimum wage Act on the national economy, among others.
The meeting is also expected to draw a composition of sub-committees on report drafting and a draft of the new national minimum wage bill.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which serves as the secretariat for the committee, is also expected to present a report, while a report of the income survey of the informal sector of the Nigerian economy in 2023 will be presented.
Meanwhile, as the labour anticipated that the new minimum wage would be announced on Workers’ Day, it had threatened that if the committee did not conclude its negotiation, industrial harmony in the country would not be guaranteed.
Labour had presented a wage figure of N615,000, which it termed as the realistic wage for workers.
