MassĀ failure of students in West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and other national examinations has been attributed to social media, which encourages wrong spelling, during exams by the students.

The National Coordinator, Achievers Spelling Bee, Noel Dauda, disclosed this at the grand finale of the 2024 Third Edition of the spelling bee at the College of Education (COE), Minna, Niger State, over the weekend.

Dauda explained that his organisation, a non-profit, over the years, discovered that students had been failing WAEC and other important examinations because of wrong spelling, saying the majority of Nigerians attached themselves to social media, where words are comfortably abbreviated, and apply the same in examinations.

ā€œTo text, people abbreviate. Our culture is really going down,ā€ he lamented.

The expert further stated that the vision of his organisation was to introduce a brand that would enhance educational development of students in public and private schools across the country.

ā€œAchieversā€™ Spelling Bee, which started in 2020, was a product of Achievers Academy involved in the training of youths in acting, script writing and other aspects of movie production, has made significant impact in many spheres of human endeavour,ā€ he added.

He appealed to the Niger State Governor, Muhammad Bago, and public-spirited individuals to support his vision.

ā€œWe are appealing to Governor Muhammad Bago, government agencies, philanthropists and business owners to support his vision, so that it can be a brand that Niger State would be proud of,ā€ he said.
