Democracy under attack in Africa, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has warned that democracy is under attack in Africa.

He disclosed this at the 53rd Conference of Association of Nigerian Law Teachers in Kano, yesterday.

He said in keeping with the nation’s foreign policy, Nigeria condemns extra constitutional seizure of power in the sub-region.

He also said it is imperative that a judicial system recognises the right of the electorate to vote its choice candidates.

The Vice President, who is also a member of the association, challenged the teachers to defend the principle of justice and rule of law.

He urged them to extend their resourcefulness beyond abstract teaching of principles and reflect the reality of social justice.

He added: “Central to democracy is the will of the voting public, and the right to elect choice candidates must be protected by judicial interpretation. This must be reflected to determine electoral cases.”

The event attracted professors of law and jurisprudence, scholars and Senior Advocates of Nigeria, among others.

In his remarks, Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, said Nigeria needs strong institutions for the sustenance of its democracy.
