Death toll in Mushin building collapse rises to three

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, has said that the death toll from the building collapse in the Mushin area of Lagos has risen to three.

He said the toll would have been higher if not for the quick intervention of the emergency agencies.

Oke-Osanyintolu, who commended all the emergency agencies for their quick response, stated that collaboration among the critical emergency agencies resulted in getting to ground zero within two hours.

He added that collaboration is critical to ensuring minimal fatalities and casualties.


Speaking specifically about the incident, he said: “Following an extensive exercise, final casualty report on the above incident is that three fatalities and seven casualties varying in severity. The affected buildings have been leveled to ground zero.”

Meanwhile, a stakeholders’ meeting of emergency management agencies was held on Monday to manage flood incidents in the state following Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted about flooding in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to ensuring safety of property and residents, reason all stakeholders are already meeting to mitigate the impact of flooding in the state.


He said because it has been predicted that the state might experience huge flooding this year, the government would do everything possible to minimize the negativity from flooding.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the state is engaging in holistic management of emergency because it knows it will help to make the negative impact to be less.

He further said that the state is always planning ahead and proactive, reason the state always improve each year on the measures put in place in previous years to check flooding.


Oke-Osanyintolu also said that aside all critical stakeholders already meeting on flood management in the state, a workshop would be held on June 3 on better flood management of flood for stakeholders and residents.

He said this would be followed by a road show to sensitise the residents on June 13 and assure them about the government preparedness and the role they have to play.
