CSOs, labour, govt collaborate to promote tax justice in Ebonyi

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), labour unions, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Ebonyi State Government are to collaborate to enhance tax justice in the state.

This, according to them, would be achievable through mass education and enlightenment of taxpayers.

The initiative was part of issues emanating from a tax awareness march, yesterday, at the Margaret Umahi International Market, Abakaliki, by members of the CSOs.

The event was organised by Neighbourhood Initiative for Women Advancement (NIWA), in collaboration with Tax Justice and Governance Platform, with support from Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and OXFAM.

The Lead Director, NIWA, Nancy Oko-Onya, who addressed traders during the sensitisation march at ‘Lot 3’ of the Market, regretted that the tax system in the state oftentimes placed heavy burden on the poor and low-income earners.

She called for proper assessment before taxation to avoid crippling budding business enterprises in the state, with its resultant economic hardship on citizens.
