CSO kicks against waterfront demolition

Rivers State Civil Society Organisation (RIVCSO) has urged the state government to rescind its plan to demolish shanties at the waterfront or provide alternative accommodation for residents of the waterfront.

Chairman of the Organisation, Enefaa Georgewill, who made this known in a statement, yesterday, stated that there had not been provisions of alternative settlement for those that would be affected.

Enefaa said: “The attention of the Rivers State Civil Society Organisation (RIVCSO) has been drawn to the new year broadcast by the Rivers State Government to demolish houses of waterfronts residents in the state.

“Surprisingly, without any plan of resettlement and compensation, some officials who refused to disclose the agency they were sent from have started marking these properties for demolition.

“RIVCSO wishes to use this medium to remind the government that most of the landowners and residents of these waterfront communities are indigenes of Rivers State and such expect their government to carry out government business with a human face.”
