Court grants man bail over alleged assault on Lagos lawyer

An Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, yesterday, granted a 60-year-old man, Ogungbe Emmanuel, bail after he pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of assault and breach of public peace.


The man was arraigned for allegedly assaulting his wife’s lawyer in a family matter.

Ogungbe, whose residential address was not given, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of assault and breach of public peace.

The prosecuting counsel, Inspector Kolade Tedunjaye, told the court that Ogungbe committed the offence on May 15, in the premises of the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ebute Metta West.

Tedunjaye alleged that Ogungbe attacked Alowonle Yetunde, who represented his wife in a family matter that involved Ogungbe.


He submitted that in the course of rendering her professional services, Ogungbe pounced on the counsel and inflicted serious injury on her.

The offence, Tedunjaye said, violated Sections 168 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate, O.O. Ikobayo, granted Ogungbe bail in the sum of N500,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She ordered Ogungbe to submit his international passport, while one of his sureties must have a landed property.

The court adjourned till June 7, for substantive trial.
