CITN intensifies move to place professionals in MDAs

President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Adesina Adedayo
The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) said it has deepened engagements with relevant strategic government institutions on the need to place at the helm of affairs, tax professionals in Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs) to demonstrate their competencies on tax matters.

The institute said it would assist in the realisation of government’s goals and objectives, particularly, in curbing revenue leakages.

President and Chairman of Council, CITN, Adesina Adedayo, revealed this during the institute’s 48th induction ceremony in Lagos, where about 680 persons were inducted as members of the institute.

He said the move was geared towards improving the standards of professional tax practice and by extension, the Nigerian tax system.

Adedayo pointed out that the institute was continuously working on ways to improve its value offering as the only professional taxation institute in the country.

Noting that taxation was an essential component of every economy, he said the role of tax professionals in shaping the economic landscape amid declining revenue from crude oil, rising debt burden, fluctuating value of the naira and increasing government expenditure, the place of taxation could not be overstated.

He urged the new inductees to project the institute positively through ethical conduct and by striving for excellence at all times.

Adedayo, who urged them not fall into the trap of complacency, said the institute expects them to hold in high esteem its core values, which have been redefined as Service, Teamwork, Excellence and Professionalism (S.T.E.P).

The CITN chief beckoned on them to strictly adhere to the guidelines and principles in the course of their professional engagements.

As tax professionals, Adedayo urged them to constantly engage and contribute meaningfully to the country impact assessment of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) tax deal in Nigeria.

To do this effectively, he implored the newly inducted members to constantly upskill their knowledge on global trends in taxation.
