Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, concluded their tour of China yesterday with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss after goalless draw against Guangzhou Evergrande.

Thomas Mueller spurned Bayern’s best chances in the second half but the home side also threatened, particularly in the first period, and deserved their chance at penalties.

Mueller’s frustrating match continued as he missed Bayern’s first kick and Guangzhou successfully converted five from five, with Xiaoting Feng bagging the winner.

The match with Guangzhou was the third of the trip – previously Bayern had defeated Valencia 4-1 in Beijing and Inter Milan 1-0 in Beijing.

The eight-day tour was not only to prepare for next season on the pitch but an attempt to increase awareness of the Bayern brand in one of the biggest markets in the world.

“I think we can be very, very pleased. It’s been a complete success,’’ chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said at a press conference.

“We’ve hit all the targets we set ourselves. All credit to (international director) Joerg Wacker and his team.

“All the Bayern representatives here have been very professional. I want to thank the team too, they’ve been magnificent.’’

The Bundesliga season begins on August 14 with Bayern hosting SV Hamburg to open the campaign. (dpa/NAN)
