Armed bandits have reportedly killed Comrade Daniel Umaru Lagi, the father of former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Nasarawa State, Innocent Lagi, a few days after his abduction.

The deceased was kidnapped on Tuesday, May 28, at about 7:20 p.m., in Wamba.
Confirming the incident, a family member, who pleaded anonymity, said bandits kidnapped the 82-year-old farmer near his residence, and two other persons.

The two escaped while the kidnappers slept but Lagi could not because of his old age and the over 10-hour trek they were subjected to in the heavy rain that fell that night.

One of the escaped victims explained that at a point Lagi could not walk and had to be carried from Wamba to Nasarawa Eggon where they were kept.

He said the kidnappers, who are mainly of Fulani extraction, demanded a N10 million ransom to release the old man. But after negotiations, they agreed to take N2 million.

He said: “We agreed to pay N2 million and sent some people to Nasarawa Eggon that night. In the process, we wanted to be sure Baba was alive. So, we demanded to hear from him. But the abductors said he was so sick and could not talk.

“We concluded he might have died and did not proceed with payment. The following day, some vigilante groups were deployed to comb the area. There they found his already decaying corpse with wounds.”

Meanwhile, Lafia Local Council council has banned motorcycles and tricycles from operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

The Guardian learned that the ban was as a result of upsurge in insecurity within and around Lafia, the state capital.

Chairman of the council, Aminu Maifata, gave the directive yesterday, after an expanded security meeting in the area.
The restriction took effect from Monday, June 3.
