A suspected armed robber was set ablaze by a group of angry youths in Wukari local government council of Taraba State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday after the suspect allegedly attacked a female Point of Sale (POS) operator along the Wukari yam market road.
Our state correspondent gathered that the suspect who pretended as a customer, went into the shop under the pretense of withdrawing some amount of money from his account.
The suspect whom our source claimed to have stabbed female POS operator on her neck with the intention of stealing her money, The Guardian learnt was apprehended while while attempting to escape.
According to our source, “the youths pursued and apprehended him before setting him on fire.”
The incident which eyewitnesses confirmed to have took place just a few meters from the Yam market, would have taken a different diamension but for the immediate arrival of the soldiers.
Though the suspect was said to have given up the ghost before the arrival of the security operatives, there present, The Guardian learnt, went a long way in dousing the tension.
Confirming the incident, the council chairman of Wukari, Ismaila Dauda, said, “It is true, one young man went into a POS operator and stabbed her to death yesterday Monday 17th June, 2024 in Wukari,
“The suspect was chased, caught and lynched to death by hoodlums.
“It’s a sad and unfortunate incident that happened, the young girl of 18 years came to prepare for NECO exams and unfortunately met her untimely death, may her gentle soul rest in peace and may Almighty God comfort the entire family.”
He said the security have announced they “are investigating the incident and Wukari is calm for now, there’s no problem, people are going about with their normal businesses.”
Also confirming the report, police spokesman, Gambo Kwache, said the suspect was truly lynched by the angry youths.
She also recounted how the suspect has approached the shop of the female POS operator in the town under the guise of making withdrawal, but ended up stabbing her to death.
A youth corps member who would not want her name made public, told The Guardian, that the youths who witnessed the attack chased down the suspect and exacted jungle justice on him.
The female POS operator whom our correspondent learnt was rushed to a nearby hospital, was confirmed to have died on arrival.
